But if a car was built for drifting then it was built for a function, even if not all drifters build their cars with a 'function over form' philosophy.

I submit that the whole function vs form debate is pointless. The owner's intent defines the function for which the car was built. Therefore, function = form.

| i agree. the original thing nick talked when he ranted about "function > form" was ALL function NO emphasis on form. or form is entirely dictated by function. i disagreed with him. - dogbreath wrote:

But if a car was built for drifting then it was built for a function, even if not all drifters build their cars with a 'function over form' philosophy. with this you could say i built it to look good so it's function is form.

| Functional looking is as important for some as hellaflush is for others. I see them both as separate styles, and I understand that many people who build both types of cars still do not track them. The point however is that they should both be respected as styles and in that, if a thread is a functional look thread than let it be.
Also may I add that drifting as a "sport" is not functional and it's not meant to be functional. It's scoring is subjective and as such, the way the cars look is as important as the way they are driven. Drifting falls into the same category as building a car to win trophies at car shows. There is nothing wrong with that but one must understand the difference between that and racing. If you are actually racing, you could have the ugliest piece of crap in the world and it being gross would still have no effect on its performance. Now I personally am here because I enjoy some of both aspects. No I am not trying to build the fastest car in the world, but with that said, I enjoy and respect modifying street cars to improve them. Manufactures are always forced to balance cost vs. performance, comfort vs. performance, and efficiency vs. performance. If I had it my way, I would buy a Viper or a 599GTO right now and do nothing but tires and brakes. Unfortunately like everyone else, I will have to wait for these things to happen and so for now, I try to take those same aspects that make those cars unique and apply them to something that's affordable. I think to a degree that's what we all do.
